Tangmere
originated as an airfield during the Great War after a journalist,
Geoffrey Dorman, force-landed there in 1916 and realised its potential
as an airfield. Now, RAF Tangmere is the Sector or Controlling Station
in Sector ‘A’ of No.11 Group, Fighter Command, covering
an area stretching from west of Brighton to Portsmouth, Southampton
and Bournemouth. It is RAF Tangmere and its satellite airfield,
RAF Westhampnett, from which the ‘Tangmere Pilots’ operate. |
